How to care for your sauna hat and peshtemal

Natural materials are different from synthetic ones in one important way. They respond to how you treat them. Looked after well, they improve over time. Neglected, they deteriorate faster than they should. The products you bring into your rituals deserve the same care you bring to the rituals themselves.

Your sauna hat - 100% virgin wool

Wool is resilient and naturally suited to heat, which is exactly why it works so well in the sauna. Where it is less forgiving is in the wash. Heat combined with agitation and harsh detergents can cause wool to felt - shrinking and thickening in a way that cannot be undone.

To wash your sauna hat, hand wash in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent. Do not wring it. Press out the water gently and reshape it while damp. Leave it to air dry away from direct sunlight.

In between washes, air it out after each use. Wool is naturally antibacterial and does not need to be washed after every session. Let it breathe and it will take care of itself.

Your peshtemal - 100% organic cotton

Cotton is more forgiving than wool, but it still benefits from gentle handling. Wash your peshtemal at 30 to 40°C on a gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener as softener coats the fibres over time and reduces absorbency.

Hang to dry rather than tumble dry. Cotton dries quickly when hung and retains its shape better without the heat of a dryer.

One thing worth knowing about your peshtemal: it gets better with every wash. The fibres soften and the towel becomes more absorbent over time. The first few washes are just the beginning.

General care

Store both pieces folded or hung in a dry, ventilated space. Avoid damp environments where moisture can linger. If something smells after use, air it out before washing. Most of the time, fresh air is enough.

The things you use most often deserve the most care. Treat them well and they will last.
